Congressional Update - June 24, 2001:
PROPERTY RIGHTS BATTLE CRY: FIELD HEARINGS FOR CARA
American Land Rights Associations campaign for local hearings gathers steam
By Carol W. LaGrasse
Property rights activists have had a CARA Victory, the American Land Rights Association, just announced from Battle Ground, Washington. Twenty-one Congressmen have signed on to a letter asking for field hearings on CARA (HR 701), according to the announcement blitzed nationally through the Land Rights Network.
Representative Butch Otter (R-ID), who sent the letter to Resources Committee Chairman Jim Hansen, is leading the effort to get field hearings for the Condemnation and Relocation Act, as the Land Rights Association has dubbed the bill.
Accusing the House Resources Committee of trying to railroad the 2001 version of (CARA) (the Conservation and Reinvestment Act), the American Land Rights Association called on its formidable Land Rights Network to work even harder for field hearings.
The full text of the Otter letter and a constantly updated list of the Congressmen who have signed on can be found on the American Land Rights Association web site.
Special PRFA Note: The Northeast is especially
threatened by CARA. Pew Charitable Trusts, one of the largest
and most powerful funders of the environmental movement, is now
financing a slick massive publicity campaign to promote land acquisition,
including acquisition of conservation easements, to buy up the
forests of northern New York. When the equally threatened forests
of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are included, over 20 million
acres of productive forests and other private land are in danger
of government acquisition for non-accessible reserves, pretended
working forests, and wild parks.
