ACTION ALERT - JUNE 2001
American Heritage Rivers - Urge President Bush to Cancel the Program
Your letters and telephone calls are needed to urge President Bush to stand his ground against the big environmental groups and cancel the American Heritage Rivers Initiative (AHRI). The program created a multitude of ways for the federal government to exert control over local land-use. The environmental groups publicly argued that this program under an earlier incarnation in Congress was innocuous, but they lobbied extremely hard for passage for over three years. After it was roundly defeated in Congress, Pres. Clinton made AHRI one of the outrageous Executive Orders of his Administration. Housed in the previously innocuous Council on Environmental Quality, this pet project of former Vice President Al Gore extended to fourteen rivers, their adjacent counties, and even entire watersheds, by the time Clinton finished the first wave of designations.
