Biography

Teresa Platt

Teresa Platt

Teresa Platt is executive director of Fur Commission USA, a trade association representing 420 mink-farming families on 330 farms in 28 states. FCUSA works to ensure superior standards of animal husbandry through its own certification program, and to educate the public about responsible fur farming and the merits of fur.

Since Teresa joined FCUSA in 1998, retail fur sales in the US have risen more than 50% in dollar terms, surpassing the record highs of the late 1980s.

Before joining the fur industry, Teresa was involved for 20 years in the Southern Californian tuna fishing industry, including managing shoreside operations for her family’s 1,000-ton seiner. Teresa helped found the Fishermen’s Coalition in 1992 to educate the public about responsible fishing practices and the importance of fishing in feeding the global village.

The 1990s also saw Teresa become a coalition-builder in support of property rights and responsible resource use. She served for a decade on the boards of the Alliance for America and the National Animal Interest Alliance, and continues to work with the latter today.
