March 24, 2006 Honorable Denise M. Sheehan, Commissioner Dear Commissioner Sheehan: I am very concerned about the current controversy over the Unit Management Plan (UMP) proposed for the Moose River Plains which lies between Route 28 and the Fulton Chain to the West Canada Lakes Wilderness Area in Hamilton and Herkimer counties. For two generations, the Moose River Plains area has provided a range of access for all those wishing to experience the natural beauty of the Adirondacks and enjoy typical North Country sports such as hiking, canoeing, hunting, fishing, and yes even snowmobiling. The character of the Moose River Plains area is an asset that should not be changed. It is my belief that our position as guardians of the ecological resources of the Adirondacks must be matched with a tempered custodial responsibility that continues to allow our residents and visitors the enjoyment that is increasingly denied to all but the heartiest of outdoorsmen and women. For this reason, I ask you to carefully deliberate all facets of the UMP proposal and the repercussions any major change will have to the region. I look forward to hearing your thoughts which I do hope will be in the best interest of the North Country and my constituents.
