THINGS WE HAVE LEARNED

Have a good committee. You need at least 2 others you can depend on to fill in at the last moment.

Make sure you check that deadlines are met and turned in promptly.

Have the help of at least one good newspaper to get the word out. We have been lucky and have had 2.

If you have petitions around at many places, make sure you check them frequently. We lost at least 80 names from theft. The people who signed them will not resign thinking they are already signed. We lose them forever as we don’t know who they were.

We kept cost down by doing a lot of printing on our home computer. Letterheads, thank you postcards, labels, etc.

Be sure to write to: All local organizations, fire companies, Kiwanis and other service groups. Then go to the local governments, town and County and to our State Representatives.

Don’t be shy. You need to ask to get letters and signatures.

Look to unusual sources for support. The internet sites for Adirondack hiking trails proved to be great for us. People sent us emails of support, and asked us to mail them petitions.

If you can, build a website. Ours has had 378 hits since the counter was installed in August! When people learn what you are about, they help by word of mouth.

DO YOUR RESEARCH! Accuracy is essential. Do not put out anything that you are not sure is correct!

GOOD LUCK
