A situation happened to Merril King and his wife Karen when they had a contract for sale on their home of 33 years from a developer. The neighbor behind them, without consulting them, filed a third-party historic designation application on their home after the fact. This halted their sale. They fought through preservation commission hearings and city council hearings, eventually prevailing.
