Alan J. Knauf

ALAN J. KNAUF is a partner in the law firm of Knauf Shaw LLP, located at 1125 Crossroads Building, 2 State Street, Rochester, New York 14614. He concentrates his law practice in environmental, municipal, land use and real estate law, and civil litigation and appeals, representing municipalities, citizens, developers and businesses in issues including hazardous waste and oil spill cleanup, brownfield development, environmental impact review, water pollution and wetlands, zoning and planning, facility siting, municipal law, and commercial real estate. Knauf is attorney for the Towns of Ontario and Huron in Wayne County, New York. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Environmental Law and Land Use and Zoning Law, and as a Superlawyer in the areas of Environmental Law, Land Use/Zoning and Real Estate Law.

Mr. Knauf is currently First Vice-Chair of the Environmental Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, and a member of the Section on Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law of the American Bar Association. He was founding Chairperson of the Environmental Law Committee, and is former Chairman of the Real Estate Council, and former President of the Young Lawyers Section, of the Monroe County Bar Association. He has also served as Chairman of the Center for Environmental Information, Inc. Mr. Knauf maintains the New York Virtual Environmental Law Center on the Internet at http://www.nyenvlaw.com. Mr. Knauf is also an Adjunct Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, teaching Practical Environmental, Health & Safety Law and Emergency Preparedness Law, has been an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Rochester, and is a frequent lecturer at continuing education programs.

He is also Vice-President and General Counsel of American Recycling & Manufacturing Company, Inc. (ARM), which provides reverse logistics for returnable packaging and product components. ARM, based in Rochester, also operates plants in Memphis, Terre Haute and Philadelphia.

Mr. Knauf received a B.S.C.E. in Environmental Engineering from M.I.T. in 1977, and a J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1980, where he was President of the Law School Student Senate. He is admitted to the bars of New York, Florida, the U.S. Supreme Court, and various other federal courts. He is a former President the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America, Park-Meigs Neighborhood Association and Downtown Alive at Five, Ltd., is former Vice-Chair of the Monroe County Planning Board and the Western New York Chapter of the American Liver Foundation, and coaches boys' soccer and baseball.

He lives in the City of Rochester with his wife Patti, a real estate broker, and their 8 and 10-year old sons. Mr. Knauf enjoys skiing and long distance running, and coaches little league and soccer.
