Jonathan P. Knauth, P.E., begins his address comparing the claims of wind energy with the actual record of production, the economic cost, and environmental.

Good intentions: Transformation through green energy

Turbines spinning at low winds are not producing power.

   

Efficiency and Capacity

Improvements of efficiency unlikely.

   

The Power Curve

The Net Output of Power from wind turbines is reduced by power that the turbines use, including 20 percent of output for heating.

   

The Effective Capacity of Wind Sites in New York are about 10 percent of their rated capacities.

Wind is out of phase with power demand.

   

Wind power is expensive. Onshore wind costs $149 per megawatt-hour, whereas natural gas costs $80 per megawatt-hour.

Adding wind power input into the electric grid increases system costs. Non-wind generators are forced to operate their units inefficiently. They cannot take units out of operation or reduce their generating capacity in response to erratic wind power inputs.

   

Replacing one conventional nuclear plant requires 10,913 wind turbines.

Jobs: Stimulus spent $4.85 million per "green" job. Government subsidies largely created jobs in China, but not in the U.S.

   

Climate: This photo catches the streams of wind turbulence caused by a wind farm.

The possibility that wind power can increase global warming.

   

Wind Energy's Real Effects:

Reduced energy efficiency of thermal units in the grid system (e.g. more carbon dioxide produced per unit of electrical output).
Financial debacle:
Spend $44,000,000 and receive $129,000 in present value for the entire 22 year period of return.

Danger from wind turbine collapse

   

Shadow Flicker and Glint: Uninhabitable conditions on nearby property.

Audible sound: Psychological distress, stress, sleep difficulty

   

Infrasound: Sub-audible sound causing rattling of metals, felt by people but not heard

Negative impacts far outweigh benefits, and range from hazard to air navigation and wildlife to noise pollution to increased costs to other generators.

   

Risks to Landowners are classical and substantial.
